Maria Sharapova

Tennis superstar, Maria Sharapova was born in Russia on April 19, 1987. Handed a racket at the age of four, the impressive natural athlete was at a tennis clinic two years later when a legend spotted her and suggested that the girl would be more than just another player. Martina Navratilova told Maria’s father that she should be taken to Florida and enrolled in the famed Bolletieri Tennis Academy right away. Mr. Sharapova took the advice and soon had secured the sponsorship of IMG sports management to cover the cost of her training and living expenses.

The move paid off, and Maria made her official tennis debut when she was eleven years old. That season she had an impressive 25-3 win/loss record and walked away with three Junior titles.  The 2002 season saw Maria allowed to play in a limited number of pro matches, as well as continuing to dominate Juniors play. Her win/loss that year was 26-3 and again walked away with three titles. The end of the season found her ranked at 186th in the WTA.

The following year, Maria was done with Juniors and joined the WTA tour. The leggy blonde exploded onto the scene and her win/loss record reflected her hunger, she finished out the season with a phenomenal 34-11 and two pro titles. Her ranking jumped to # 32.  But if people were impressed with the Russian beauty then, they were about to be completely blown away by her: in 2004 Maria won Wimbledon, the first Russian to win the singles title and the third youngest to do so.

Maria won singles titles in both 2007 and 2008, but has had to pull out of matches recently, including the Olympics, because of a persistent injury. Maria also does some endorsements, and with her stunning good looks and tall frame, it will be no wonder if she does not take up acting after her tennis career ends.

Maria has very long blonde hair, with sideswept bangs. She wears it pulled back, of course, when she is on the court, but favors allowing it to be free when she is relaxing.
