Jewel was born May 23, 1974 and began a music career at the age of six. Young Jewel performed in Eskimo villages and tourist attraction with her mother and father. After her parents divorced, Jewel stayed with her dad so that she could continue to tour. She was attending the Michigan Interlochen Fine Arts Academy when she wrote her first songs.
After moving to San Diego to be with her mother, Jewel found out that the daily grind of work was both not for her and not good for her budding career. She quit working altogether and went to live in her van so that she could focus on music. Soon she had her first regular gig at a coffeehouse in Pacific Beach and by 1993 had developed a strong following there. Her 1995 debut album “Pieces of You” was a slow mover but eventually made it onto the charts. Three years later she released two more albums, a spoken word and a musical release.
In 2003, Jewel shocked her fan base when she released the dance/pop album “0304” which featured dance tinged songs and flirtatious lyrics. One of the songs got more radio play than any other Jewel songs and that same song, “Intuition” was used in a commercial for a new razor. In 2008, Jewel released “Perfectly Clear” which has a more country flavor.
Jewel has long blonde hair, which she wears simply parted in the middle.
