| Charlize Theron
Charlize was born on a ranch in South Africa on August 7, 1975. Her life there was far from idyllic, but her every tragedy has given her more power to emote; she uses these memories to breath life into her every character. But her life was not all horror either, she did have a best friend, her pet goat and a young girl’s crush. At 9 she watched the movie “Splash” and that was it; she was in love with Tom Hanks.
The story goes that a starving 18 year old Theron was discovered by an agent who witnessed her verbal confrontation with a bank manager who was refusing to cash the young woman’s check. That heated debate coupled with her stunning good looks got her noticed and soon she was on her way to becoming the Hollywood powerhouse that she is now.
Charlize is trained in ballet, but as a young teen went to Milan to model. Once she returned to New York, she resumed her dance career, but that was tragically cut short after a knee injury. Acting seemed the logical next step, so Charlize began pursuing that. In 1994, she had a bit part in Children of the Corn III. In 1997, she really gained attention in her role in “The Devil’s Advocate”. She starred in that movie as Keanu Reeves mentally fragile young wife, tormented by none other than Al Pacino in his role as the Devil.
Not every single film that she made was a hit by any stretch, but with each she learned something new about either acting or about her self. In 1998, she appeared in “Mighty Joe Young”, followed the next year by “The Cider House Rules”. “The Italian Job” came in 2003, but it would be a movie released later that year that would start earning Charlize some recognition from her peers. “Monster” did not play on her stunning, good looks, in fact, Theron was barely recognizable as the serial killer Aileen Wournos, having gained a lot of weight for the role. The film eventually racked up over a dozen awards, including an Oscar for Theron. Movie roles continued to have their ups and downs for the tall blonde, first with the clunker “Aeon Flux” and then with “North Country” a film for which she earned a second Oscar nomination.
Charlize is a chameleon, allowing her hair to change to suit her movie roles, but her favored look off screen is short, blonde and very classy. On screen she has sported the frumpy dark blonde hair of a struggling single mother as well as the short, mousy cut that she wore for “The Devil’s Advocate”.
